ELEGUÁ
"Owner of the Crossroads"
Eleguá (also spelled Eleggua, Elewa, Exu, Eshu, Elegba or Legba) is the orisha (deity) of the crossroads, doorways and gates. He is called upon first before communicating with the orishas as he guards the veil between the earthly and divine realms. He is key in allowing ashé (blessings) to flow as he is the one that opens up the doors to our opportunities in life; new beginnings, endings and crossroads.
Eleguá has a special spot for elders and children; his behavior is sometimes child like. His colors are red and black and he is honored on Mondays with special gifts including but not limited to honey, rum, tobacco toys and palm oil. Eleguá is usually represented in the form of a concrete or clay head. He resides within an earthen vessel, his features are represented with cowrie shells.
